The reason economically viable solar power has not been developed is that
it is not in the vested interests of fossil-fuel suppliers and energy
corporations to develope it. "Power to the people" - everyone with their
own independent, cheap electricity source is the very last thing these
industries want. In Canada, where I´m from, many farms in the early 20th
century had their own windmills and primitive electricity storage systems.
When large-scale, commercial hydro power became available farmers were
encouraged to "modernize" and buy their electricity instead of producing
it themselves. I took Environmental Studies at university in the 1970´s
and took part in protesting a nuclear station near Toronto. I seem to
recall that the cost of building it would have made it possible for all
homes in the province of Ontario to be fitted with solar panels. But that
was the last thing the nuclear industry wanted to know about.
